Conversations with Maria Menounos

My pal and collaborator Maria Menounos has a brand new webcast called Conversations with Maria Menounos. It's produced by The Weinstein Group, Telepictures and Underman/Omegagirl productions. Her first guest is Zoe Saldana (Star Trek: Into Darkness, Avatar). The format is a relaxed, long form interview, and it's obvious from watching this first episode that it's a perfect fit for Maria.

I'm proud to be a part of this project as announcer, and I hope you all enjoy it too!

Bystander miniseries now online

The first two eps of Michael McQuilkin's web miniseries Bystander are up now over at YouTube, and let me tell you -- it's good stuff. Mike commissioned me to do the soundtrack for the film, and I'm exceedingly proud of the results.

Whew... 2012 was a busy year! Much of it was spent laying down groundwork for a bunch of new projects --some of which we'll see very soon -- so I've been relatively quiet, output-wise. That will all change as my first project comes to fruition:

The Unlivin' Dead project (a duo collaboration with Kev MannDude) is going full steam ahead, and we're aiming to start playing shows early this year -- so watch for us. Here's a link to our first 'EP', a bit of a 'shot across the bow' to introduce us. It's a mix of demos and more finished work, and you can preview (or purchase) it here:

'Bald Guys - Fortune Teller

Sir Richard plays Bubblegum music!

This is for a feature film that is in pre-production, done in the voice of one of the characters.

I love 60s/70s Bubblegum music (1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express, The Archies, et al) and I sort of nudged things a bit to allow me to work in this vein. I'm really happy with the results, and I'm thinking of doing a whole album in this style... what do you think?

Music from the Archives - Handfull O' Bald Guys "Ya-Ma, Son of Gamera"

Here’s another track from the vault, another one from the Wilmington Sessions (see my previous post for the session details). This track is another biggie in the ‘Bald Guys oeuvre, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was a heck of a lot of fun to play live, as it’s kind of a silly song, a Toho bildungsroman set to the strains of a triumphant power anthem. All second-like, it pretty nicely expresses the oddball sci-fi aesthetic that we traded in. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, this song is an excellent example of the wacked-out songwriting combo of Squamata and Wentworth. Jason Squamata is, as cagey readers will have already sussed, my partner in crime on the TEENAGE LUVKRAFT comic book which is currently in production. He’s one of my oldest friends, and it feels like we’ve been collaborating since we first met – which, I suppose, we have.

Anyhow, enough waxing – let’s hit some sonic waves.

Music from the Archives - Handfull O' Bald Guys "TJS-510"

I've started wandering through the "archives", such as they are, and trying to get all of my past musical junk in order. So, I'll be posting music from my early days of singin' and strummin'. Hopefully this will be of interest to some -- please let me know!

This first installment is a song that was an early staple of my first band, Handfull O' Bald Guys. HFOBG was initially composed of myself, Carolyn Klumpp (drums), Kevin McQuilkin (bass) and Mike McQuilkin (synthesizer). We started the band in 1992, and played some gigs at the Billerica club Edible Rex before breaking up and reforming with the lineup that produced the following song.

The lineup on this track includes myself (vocals, guitar), Jon Dyer (guitar), Carolyn Klumpp (drums) and Bob Wilson (bass).

TJS-510 was recorded in 1992 in Wilmington MA, by the fella who did sound for Edible Rex. He had a little studio called Kashmir where we recorded 5 tracks. I'll post the other ones if there's any interest in hearing them.

The session was lots of fun, we were all very young, and I was hepped up on No-Doz for some reason. Listening to this music makes me feel weird, like I'm looking at my baby pictures. Hope that you enjoy it.

Music for Independent Feature "Bystander"

I recently contributed an original score to the independent feature film Bystander.

Bystander is a reflective, sometimes humorous story about two strangers who travel through a pre-dawn townscape looking to find some proof that they are alive, that the world hasn't come to an end. In the course of their late-night meanderings, they meet up with a menagerie of odd characters who each have opinions to share about the nature of human existence, and who each seem to hold a piece of the larger puzzle.

Bystander was written and directed by my friend and frequent partner in crime Michael McQuilkin, and stars another friend and colleague, the supremely talented actor Brian A. White.
